Preparing Your Artificial Turf Lawn for Icing and Snow

Feb 16, 2026

Homeowners with high-quality artificial turf won’t face many of the risks that natural lawns face in winter. Unlike real grass that turns brown, dies or washes out under snow, ice and frost, synthetic grass is very durable and tolerant of these issues here in the Carolinas.

Although artificial turf holds up well in winter, it’s important to stay on top of the periodic turf maintenance tasks and incorporate a few cold-season best practices. Here’s what to do.

Why Periodic Maintenance Matters for Artificial Turf with Winter Weather

Strong turf maintenance practices are part of what helps your synthetic turf last for years. These steps might differ from traditional mowing, seeding, fertilizing and edging of natural lawns, but they’re still important and often need to adapt with the seasons.  Periodic maintenance will minimize any issues related to debris and contaminants under the snow or ice.

Can Snow or Ice Damage Artificial Grass?

Snow, ice, high winds and other winter weather generally won’t damage artificial turf, but challenges can still occur.

Pre-Storm Checklist for Winter Storm Prep

When winter weather threatens, there are a few ways to fortify and prepare your turf before the storm.

Clear Leaves, Twigs and Debris

Keep your turf clear and clean. Gather leaves and twigs, and fluff the blade fibers into their normal positions. Remove chairs, lawn toys or decorative items. If the weather is warm enough, hose down your lawn. The moving water will wash away dirt and small debris that might otherwise freeze and cling to the turf.

Check Drainage and Infill Levels

Melting snow and ice need plenty of space to run off, so be sure to check your turf’s drainage before a storm. The turf’s infill plays a crucial role in this drainage. You can redistribute the infill using a special rake. That way, the turf will be able to drain properly, and the blades can better withstand the extra weight of winter precipitation.

Gather Turf-Safe Winter Tools

Make sure your turf maintenance equipment is ready for after the storm. Essential turf-safe winter tools include:

  • Soft-bristle brooms
  • Turf brushes
  • Leaf blowers

Plastic shovels may also be useful for snow removal as long as you use them cautiously. Avoid driving shovels into hard ice and snow. Otherwise, you could wind up hitting the turf underneath.

Do I Need a Tarp for My Turf in Winter?

Generally, there’s no need to cover your turf with a tarp in winter. However, it can help you avoid a heavy turf clearing after a winter storm. If you do choose to use a tarp, keep up with your standard winter maintenance tasks, all the same.

What NOT To Do With Artificial Turf in Winter

As you prepare for and clean up from winter weather, be careful not to accidentally damage your turf. Keep these items in mind:

  • Don’t use metal rakes or shovels to clear snow and ice. Stick to your normal, turf-approved plastic products.
  • Keep salt, ice melt and other solvents confined to driveways and sidewalks. They might discolor the turf.
  • Don’t pour boiling water onto your turf. This runs the risk of melting and warping blades.
  • Avoid pressure-washing turf in cold temps. To melt ice and frost, use a gentle stream of water that will not harm the blades.
  • Don’t try to force ice off blades. Rather, let it melt naturally, then fluff it back into shape using your rake.

Post-Storm Recovery and Professional Turf Maintenance Support

Once snow and ice have melted and you have some decent weather, take time to inspect your turf for any touch up maintenance.  For example, brush your fibers back into place using an approved tool if needed.
